Climate activists have lost sight of their mission

"What too many well-meaning activists don’t seem to understand — or don’t want to admit — is that the clean energy industry is nowhere near ready to replace fossil fuels, which make up 60 percent of all electricity production in the United States. Even if the country were prepared politically to start turning off its carbon spigot, it simply could not do so without generating an energy crisis."

General Atomics develops new cladding for nuclear fuel

"Silicon carbide can survive temperatures hotter than molten lava but can be brittle in its pure form, historically limiting its use as a structural material. GA-EMS solved this problem by incorporating silicon carbide fibre into the cladding. The fibre reinforces the material similar to the way steel rebar is used to reinforce concrete."

Why Californians Have Some of the Highest Power Bills in the U.S.

"In Borrego Springs, a desert town of 3,000, temperatures often top 110 degrees Fahrenheit in summer and air conditioners run nonstop. The town’s primary utility, San Diego Gas & Electric, has raised electric rates 82% in the past 10 years as it poured money into wildfire prevention and expanding and greening the grid."

Wildfire intensity rises across northern hemisphere

"Western Canada is enduring an “extreme fire year”, said the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (Cams), with estimated emissions at levels comparable with the previous highest years of the past two decades, only surpassed by the record set in 2023."

Simple steps to stop people dying from heatwaves

"Air conditioning, where affordable, is part of the answer. If powered by renewable energy, it is not bad for the climate, and it can save lives. A study in the Lancet concluded that there were 345,000 heat-related deaths worldwide in 2019 among the over-65s, and that the toll would have been 50% higher without air conditioning. So environmentalists are wrong to shun this wonderful technology. Since the organisers of the Paris Olympics decided not to install air conditioners in athletes’ quarters, many teams will simply bring their own."
